Female Hair Loss: Causes

Causes of female hair loss include diet, stress, pregnancy, hormones, heredity, illness, and medications.  Typically when a woman loses her hair, it is a temporary side effect to something else that is going on physically or emotionally.  When this other problem is taken care of, the hair loss will usually remedy itself.  The extent of the hair loss and whether it is a temporary or permanent problem depends on the cause of the hair loss.

Some temporary causes of hair loss in women pertain to the diet and nutrients their bodies are receiving or aren’t receiving.  Having an excess of vitamin A in a female’s diet can cause hair loss.  The presence of certain elements, such as amphetamines, anticholesterol agents, antimitotics, and anesthesia are also to blame for some cases of female hair loss.  Lacking protein, essential fatty acids, and zinc can also be a cause of female hair loss.

Emotional troubles and stress account for a large portion of hair loss cases in women.  This type of hair loss is called Telogen Effluvium.  Most women who are affected by this type of hair loss are between the ages of 40 and 70.

Another medical reason why women lose there hair pertains to illnesses.  Thyroid and liver disease, hepatic and renal failure, anemia, anorexia, bulimia, and infections such as viral, fungal, and protozoan are all medical conditions that may cause female hair loss.

The months that follow childbirth is a time when many women notice hair loss.  The reason for this relates to imbalances in hormone levels.  The problem remedies itself and normal hair growth returns within months.
