Temporary Hair Loss

Sudden hair loss is generally a different condition than gradual hair loss.  The causes for the two conditions differ immensely.  The disorder for sudden hair loss is called either Anagen Effluvium or Alopecia Areata, depending on the cause.  Anagen Effluvium is the term for sudden hair loss resulting from both chemicals and radiation.  Most people who suffer from Anagen Effluvium are undergoing cancer treatments that interrupt the growing process of hair.  Alopecia Areata is an immune disorder that results in hair loss.  There is no explanation for the disorder, but the process almost always results in the hair growing back on its own. 

Treatments for sudden hair loss can be difficult to determine because often the hair will return on its own with some time and patience.  Sometimes Alopecia Areata is treated with Cortisone injections.  These injections work to stimulate the hair follicles and cause regrowth to occur.  This process is not an easy one and must be repeated monthly.  There is also a possibility that the treatment will not work, and there is no way of predicting who will get results from the treatment and who will not.
