The Mental Aspect of Hair Loss

The psychology of hair loss is really not based on losing hair, but simply based on loss, or change.  With anything important that is lost, one will grieve this loss is some way or another.  Everybody is different in dealing with losses.  While some get over it within the “acceptable period of time,” others have a difficult time accepting the loss.

For those who have difficulty with accepting hair loss, they sometimes seek alternative remedies.  Remedies for avoiding hair loss that has already occurred include hair replacement methods.  Some resolve to get a hair piece to cover up their hair loss.  Others consider getting hair restoration surgery almost immediately upon losing their hair. 

There are no physical side effects to baldness.  Some people even say that hair loss is not a medical condition.  However, what they may not realize is that there are many psychological side effects in people experiencing hair loss.  Everybody has a different reaction to losing their hair.  Many people will lose their self-esteem and confidence, causing problems in their social and work lives.  Women may feel they lack femininity because society defines females with long, flowing hair.  Business men may feel they need hair to be promoted to the next level of success, therefore they justify getting a hair transplant.   Those in the entertainment field may see hair as a prerequisite.  And everyone equates hair with youth.  Whatever the reason, many who experience hair loss seek professional advice promptly.
