The Link Between Propecia and Telogen Effluvium

Telogen Effluvium is a type of hair loss that does not result from heredity.  It is the result of physical illnesses, emotional disturbances, traumatic events, stressful circumstances, or other chemical or physical changes in the body.  These changes cause hair to slip into its resting phase prematurely, which ultimately makes hair shed suddenly. 

Typically there is no treatment for Telogen Effluvium.  The cause of the problem must first be identified.  Frequent causes for Telogen Effluvium include stress, diets, childbirth, illnesses, and medications.  Once the reason for the hair loss is known, it can be taken care of.  Usually taking care of the root of the problem will remedy the hair loss problem; therefore patience is often the remedy for Telogen Effluvium. 

Propecia is the oral medication used to treat hair loss due to the overproduction of Dihidryotestotesterone, or DHT, the hormone that weakens hair follicles.  Propecia is the only oral medication that works by preventing DHT to be produced in the body.  Because Telogen Effluvium is not caused by DHT, Propecia would not work as a remedy to this type of hair loss.  However, Propecia is extremely useful in helping many men with their Androgenetic Alopecia troubles.
