Can Saw Palmetto Help Hair Loss

Many people experiencing hair loss will try any remedy around in an attempt to treat their hair loss problems.  Herbal remedies have become a huge part of treating many conditions in the medical world today.  Hair loss is not an exception.  The herb Saw Palmetto, also known as Serenoa Repens or Sabal Serrulata, is used by many in an attempt to increase hair growth.  Whether it works or not is the important question at hand. 

The herb Saw Palmetto comes from a small plant mostly found in the south western United States, highly concentrated in Southern California.  The berries on these plants produce an extract that many say works to improve the hair loss.  It is not a medication that has been proven to work to improve hair growth or slow down the hair loss process; however, some people have experienced benefits including these very effects.  It is said that the herb reduces the amount of DHT in one’s body, which is the hormone that causes hair loss. 

Saw Palmetto was originally used to prostate enlargement.  The extract is more commonly known as the drug Permixon, is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia.  Today, although the use of Saw Palmetto is not proven to help either condition, many people use the herb to treat both hair loss and enlarged prostate conditions.
