What Causes Hair Loss

.) Increased Levels of DHT:  When DHT levels rise, it is known that hair loss can occur as a direct cause.  This type of hair loss is permanent, and mostly is found in men, although some women can experience this as well.  There are several solutions to this problem.  Contact your physician to discuss your options.

.) Heredity:  Either or both parents who have the gene can pass it on to their children.

.) Childbirth:  Many women lose their hair a few months after they give birth.  Giving birth to a child often makes way for temporary hair loss because of sudden hormonal changes in the woman’s body.  There are low levels of estrogen in a woman’s body after childbirth, and a decreased level of estrogen is one of the top causes of hair loss.

.) Illness:  There are many illnesses and medications that can cause hair loss.  Diseases such as anorexia, bulimia, hypothydroidism, anemia, hepatic or renal failure, and viral, fungal, or protozoan infections can all cause hair loss as a side effect.  Once the illness is under control, hair loss should return to its normal growth patterns.

.) Stress:  Stress is the cause of many cases of hair loss.  When we are in stressful situations, physically ill, or emotionally disturbed, our hair and scalps are dry and unhealthy.  Often this will lead to the shedding of our hair.  Our hair is one of the first parts of our bodies that demonstrate stress; therefore it is sensitive to stressful situations.  Once stress levels are under control, hair should return to its normal growth and loss cycle.
