How Hair Transplants Go Bad

With any surgical procedure there is bound to be scarring. But with hair transplantation it isn’t just visual, scarring can directly affect the outcome of the procedure, making it a large reason for so many of the bad hair transplants that are being repaired today.

There is no way to avoid scarring when it comes to a hair transplant. It’s as true today as it was 25 years ago when the procedure was in its infancy. The sheer size of the donor hair sections, as large as 20-30 hair follicles at a time, meant that the wounds had to be larger when inserted into the scalp. This led to some very unsatisfactory results.

But even today with fine-tuned procedures like Follicular Micro Grafting the wounds can lead to scarring if not done properly. This scarring can at the very least can cause visual distortions that make the transplant look unnatural as well as lead to the hair follicle growing in a different direction than was intended. At the worst the scarring cause the graft to depress into the scalp leading to poor hair growth and in some cases the grafts to simply fall out.

It is important when choosing a hair restoration surgeon who will either perform your initial hair transplant or fix your earlier one that you choose who cares what you will look like not just 6 months down the road but for the rest of your life.
