Information on Hair Transplant Removal

Just as there are procedures available to transplant hair, a hair transplant removal procedure is also available if a patient is not satisfied with his or her original hair transplant surgery.  Hair transplant removal provides the patient an opportunity to correct or replace the results of a bad procedure.

Removing hair grafts from an original hair transplant procedure is as precise as having grafts added to the scalp.  A patient may choose to have the original procedure corrected for a variety of reasons, which includes bad hairlines and “pluggy”- looking grafts.  The patient might also be concerned with lack of density or improper graft positioning. 

First an assessment of the damage is made to determine the best way to remove the hair grafts.  If the removal is standard with no apparent additional obstacles present, the hair transplant is removed using a procedure called Follicular Isolation or Follicular Unit Extraction.  FUI allows a fairly quick and relatively simple removal of several follicular units with a larger graft area.  In FUE, the grafts are singularly extracted using small punches, which might create a problem in terms of additional donor site scarring. 

Removal and re-implantation are standard methods used in reparative hair transplantation.
