Stopping Hairloss

A lot of products claim to stop hairloss. They claim to be able to increase blood flow, or use infrared lights to open up the hair follicles. Unfortunately the rate of blood flow in the scalp has nothing to do with hairloss, as proved by the high rate of success among hair transplant patients. And fancy lights don’t do much beyond pad the wallets of those selling them.

To stop hairloss you must either regenerate the damaged hair follicles in the scalp or stop the process of hairloss itself. Of all the numerous products that claim to stop hairloss, and there are thousands, only two have gotten FDA approval, Rogaine and Propecia.

Rogaine (Minoxidil) was first used to lower blood pressure, but it had one curious side effect--a propensity to stop hairloss. It should be said that Rogaine does not work for everybody, some 50-60% of patients report new hair regrowth, but that being said this topical over- the- counter solution is a great way to reinvigorate shrunken and damaged hair follicles.

Propecia (Finasteride) is a prescription pill that is not quite as effective in promoting new hair growth as Rogaine but has been found to very effective in its ability to stop hairloss. Propecia does this by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone that while helpful in the development of the fetus is also the main culprit of baldness.

Perhaps the most effective and permanent way to stop hairloss is the hair transplant. By transferring a large number of grafts containing a small number of hair follicles, usually 1-4, to an area of the scalp in need of transplantation, hairloss can be stopped and the patient can have a full, healthy, and natural looking head of hair. Contact Pistone Hair Restoration to find out the best way for you to stop hairloss.
