Reversing Hairloss

Is hairloss reversible? Can you get back what you once lost? Or is it gone forever? The short answer is maybe.

Until the 80’s you had little chance of reversing hairloss. Your options stopped at the tremendously ineffective comb over, the equally artificial looking hair replacement system (or wig), and the permanent hair transplant. But even the hair transplant was so crude, with its large plugs and infant technology, that it often was better to remain suffering with hairloss.

But then in the 80’s a medication called Rogaine (or its more scientific name Minoxidil) came onto the scene that made hairloss reversible…sort of. Rogaine not only could stop existing hairloss but also could reinvigorate new growth in damaged and shrunken hair follicles. But its effectiveness rested in how early in the hairloss process you started using it and though it worked for a majority of patients, some people found it did no effect.

In the 90’s a new sheriff came to town in the form of Propecia (Finasteride). Propecia didn’t so much make hairloss reversible, but by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT, it proved very effective in stemming existing hairloss. Unfortunately like Rogaine, once use of the medication stop, so did its results.

Then in the 90’s the hair transplant got a bit of a ‘facelift.’ (Excuse the mixed metaphor.) Gone were the clumpy plug-like hair transplants of the 70’s and in were new follicular micro and mini-grafting procedures that could transplant much smaller sections of hair, making the scalp natural and full. And though it does not technically make hairloss reversible, it may be the most effective and permanent treatment in dealing with hairloss.
