Baldness Cures have been around since Cleopatra used ground horse teeth and deer marrow to help out her boyfriend, Julius Caesar. And though ‘Caesar’ in Latin actually means “abundant hair” there was no amount of deer marrow or rancid hippo fat, another popular hair remedy from antiquity, that was going to prevent Emperor Caesar from becoming another victim of the baldness cure industry.
The truth is, there is no cure for baldness….yet. Whether it be the Renaissance and its affinity for cow saliva, or ancient China and their use of ground up animal testes, or modern-day herbal supplements there is no product, pill, or medication that is a baldness cure. What certain products can do is stop the progression of hair loss or at least slow it down and in some cases grow new hair in shrunken hair follicles.
Baldness, it should be said, actually occurs when an abundant amount of (DHT) dihydrotestosterone causes the hair follicles to shrink to the point where they can no longer regenerate new hair. That doesn’t mean the hairs disappear and can’t be rejuvenated. Products like Minoxidil, or Rogaine as it is known, were originally designed to lower blood pressure but were actually found to do something quite amazing. Grow hair. As a topical application it had very few side effects, but its effectiveness depended on how early the treatment was applied to the scalp, and sometimes took up to 12 months for it to take full effect.
A product like Propecia, a pill form of Proscar originally designed for an enlarged prostate, is much more effective at stopping hair loss than Rogaine but not so good at promoting new hair growth, especially if the pattern baldness has been set in for awhile.
These are the only two baldness prescriptive treatments approved by the FDA and neither of them advocates that they have a cure for baldness. Perhaps someday there will be a baldness cure that can completely restore hair to a scalp that has been the victim of hair loss, but until then be very careful in buying a product that promises something it can’t deliver.
