Medical hair restoration might be the most exciting thing to happen to hair loss sufferers since the invention of the hat. Once the domain of crude technology and sub-standard results, medical hair restoration has turned into an exciting and highly effective option for those wanting to restore hair and get back the scalp that they remember.
For those wanting to keep their hair restoration cost down, short-term solutions like one of the FDA-approved hair restoration medications might just be the way to go. Rogaine was originally designed to lower blood pressure; it just so happened to also grow hair, and thus the boon of the medical hair restoration industry was born. As a topical solution directly applied to the scalp, Rogaine proved to help a majority of patients in actually stopping current hair loss and in some cases regrow hair. Some patients, however, found it a little bit inconvenient and messy, but for the most part people looking for an alternative to hair restoration surgery found Rogaine quite acceptable.
Rogaine’s popularity all through the 80’s and up until the 90’s was dampened only by the introduction by another hair restoration drug designed to do something else entirely. Propecia (finesteride) had as its chief purpose the treatment of an enlarged prostate. Again its most interesting side effect was effective hair growth which made it an instant hit and a medicinal best seller. Propecia was more convenient than Rogaine, with its prescription pill-form, and proved to work slightly better in stopping the current rate of hair loss. And it’s effectiveness was superior to Rogaine. Where Rogaine dealt mostly with the follicles themselves by reinvigorating shrunken and damaged hair follicles, Propecia actually went right to the cause of baldness, namely the conversion of testosterone into DHT, a hormone responsible for hair loss. It blocked that conversion, thereby slowing down hair loss and stimulating hair regrowth.
But both Rogaine and Propecia as hair restoration methods still have one major disadvantage -- they are temporary. Once you stop taking them your results will slowly reverse back to what you would have had you not taken them. This is why many patients are turning to surgical hair restoration procedures like the hair transplant. Though more expensive in the short term (but not in the long term), when it comes to hair restoration techniques nothing has a higher satisfaction rate or more permanence than hair transplantation. Through the use of cutting-edge procedures like Follicular Unit Transplantation the hair transplant has been resurrected from its ‘plug-like’ appearance of the 70’s and 80’s to give the modern hair restoration customer a very real possibility in getting a full and healthy head of hair. And unlike hairpieces, the new procedures are very durable when in contact with pesky environmental factors like wind, rain, and sun. Afterall, it is your own growing hair.
