For years collagen was the pre-eminent solution used for lip enhancement by most cosmetic dermatologists. And then a few years ago Swedish researchers were working on a compound that could alleviate joint pain and found that by injecting Restylane, an element that already exists in the body, skin tissue volume could be increased. This increase in volume proved most effective in filling up skin that was depressed and shrunken and giving the patient a full and youthful look to their appearance. A brand-new cosmetic industry was born.

To answer your question…Restylane does work in the same way that Collagen does by filling up the surface area of the skin. What makes Restylane different from Collagen is that is it is a hyaluronic gel that is already present in the body. Collagen is an animal-based product that is derived from purified cow skin making it susceptible to transmission of certain animal diseases. Because Restylane is already in the body, injections are not prone to allergic reactions and the side effects of Restylane are very infrequent and for the most part mild.

Like Collagen, Restylane is not a permanent solution to lip enhancement. Some patients have seen results for up to 6 months, but for the most part, patients see results for between 4-6 months. This is still about a month longer than collagen and without many of the risks associated with it.
